Mental Toughness

In 2006, Dr Cory Middleton completed groundbreaking research into those characteristics that bring about mental toughness. The research involved in-depth interviews of over 30 world sporting champions, providing the scope to learn about mental toughness from Australia’s great sporting heroes, and for all of us to profit from the sharing of these experiences.

The research revealed that elite performers have an intimate awareness of – self-belief, determination, coping, focus – and above all else a positive and mentally tough mindset which believes goals can be achieved through perseverance and patience. Mental toughness was defined as an unshakeable perseverance and conviction towards some goal despite pressure or adversity. Moreover, attaining mental toughness requires the presence of some or all of the twelve mental toughness components. The Fortius-Mindset™ Map below translates this research into business practice.

The Grey Zone of the Fortius-Mindset™ Map - Self-Belief and Motivation - provides employees with overall drive and determination to persevere. The Pink Zone of the mindset map - Focus and Coping - includes the mental skills used in the ‘heat of battle!’ Taken together, these four key areas operate to bring about mental toughness.

Our Opinion
Until recently, mental toughness remained probably one of the most used but least understood terms in the area of performance psychology. Most commonly referred to in the sports domain, mental toughness is used to describe performances where individuals are able to perform against the odds – bouncing back from adversity or performing under extraordinary pressures. Whilst these characteristics are what we see as mental toughness, they are merely outcomes of the process. To fully understand mental toughness one needs to be able to readily identify the characteristics within a person that bring about such displays of toughness.
